4 Work from Home Style Tips | Style Guide for Social Distancing

Many of us are finding ourselves working from home right now, which means our routines have been drastically changed and that positivity and motivation might be slipping just a little bit.

So in today’s blog, I’m sharing four style related work from home tips that are helping me stay positive and motivated as I've navigated this WFH situation for the last few months in my new career. Hopefully, these can help you too!

GET UP, GET READY, GET DRESSED.

Now if you've seen some of my posts on Instagram, you know that I focus on keeping a structure and focus on style. That's because I really do believe that it helps with motivation, productivity, and positivity.

WORK FROM HOME AND PUT YOUR PANTS ON

Getting dressed, getting ready and getting up in the morning at the same time helps you get into that work mode and stay productive.

Don't get me wrong, I know that staying in sweats is so easy! Even skipping pants on Zoom calls is tempting, but when we start to lose that effort, it trickles down into other areas of our lives. Let’s jump into the tips!

WORK FROM HOME TIP 1: MORNING ROUTINE

Tip #1 is to keep that morning routine intact. Whatever you morning ritual was on a normal day of work, keep it for your new WFH schedule.

So get up, take a shower, brush your teeth, do your hair, keep whatever skincare routine you had so you can stay on track. Keeping those same actions intact at home are helping me wake up and be more alert in the mornings.

PHYSICAL MORNING ROUTINE ACTIONS SIGNAL IT’S TIME FOR WORK (FROM HOME)

Those physical actions are telling my brain that it's time to go. So yes, set that alarm (don’t roll your eyes at me) and get moving.

Make sure you stay intentional with those morning routines, because that active energy that you put in is going to set you up for a perfect WFH day.

WORK FROM HOME TIP 2: GET DRESSED

Try getting into spring style! The full outfit is from Nifty-Genius.

Tip #2 is to get dressed for work. You got ready in the morning, so you might as well change into a good work outfit.

When I say get into your work outfit, I don’t mean what you always had to wear to the office. I’m not trying to make you miserable here.

IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE YOUR USUAL SUIT AND TIE FOR WFH

We’re changing men’s work-from-home attire! All I'm saying is don't wear what you slept in.

Putting some effort into my style again translates into putting effort into my actual day. Make sure you're setting yourself up for

success. Dare I say dress for success? Plus, why not up your work-from-home style game?

PUT ON SOMETHING THAT GETS YOU EXCITED!

We're not leaving the house right now, so do it for yourself. Whatever's going to put you in a good mood is what you should be wearing while working from home. I’ve been going for easy casual spring options, mainly because I don’t want to sacrifice all of my spring style and because I feel the best in it.

I may also be holding out hope for at least one rooftop hang this season…

Now is also a good time to challenge yourself, especially if you’re feeling a little creatively stunted while stuck at home. It's a great time to go explore your closet and put some new combos together that get you excited for your at-home workday.

TRY THE #THREADCHALLENGE WHILE WORKING FROM HOME!

If you are stuck, I’ve been hosting #threadchallenges on my IG page. We're challenging ourselves every week to style around a certain theme.

We've done monochrome, a white tee challenge, an elevated style challenge, and a prints challenge. We’re always doing something and it gets those creative juices flowing. Stay tuned for those!

The key is to get dressed and get ready for the day so that working from home isn’t as boring!

WORK FROM HOME TIP 3: CHANGE OUT OF YOUR WORK CLOTHES

Maybe it’s a little counterintuitive, but tip #3 is to change out of those work clothes at the end of the day. When it comes time to end the workday, change out of that work from home outfit like you would normally after a full day.

DON’T GO STRAIGHT TO YOUR PJS!

You want to change into something that's going to physically signal to your brain that it's time to decompress or enter THE CHILL ZONE. What? You don’t have one?

Avoid those PJs for just a little bit longer so you can stay alert.

Now's the time that we get to physically connect with whoever we’re quarantined with or virtually connect with the people we miss!

KEEP YOUR CHILL OUTFIT COMFORTABLE AND INTENTIONAL

A comfortable athleisure outfit that took just a bit of effort to put together will help you relax and stay alert and engaged in those after-work (from home) conversations.

SAVE THE PJS FOR BEDTIME

Putting on pj’s is another physical signal to your brain that's telling you, "Okay, we've entered bedtime. I can let go."

Main points: change out of those work clothes at the end of the WFH day so you're in something comfortable, but can still stay alert in. Don’t put your pj’s on before bed!

WORK FROM HOME TIP 4: DON’T SHY AWAY FROM SWEATS

Tip #4 is to not ignore your sweats. Now, I know this is expanding a little bit on what we talked about and tip #3, but I just wanted to head this off with a pass before I get the comment "I feel my best in my sweats." That's fine!

I'm not telling you to not wear your sweats. I'm not even going to fault you for working in them if they truly help you do your best work and stay productive. Just be honest with yourself.

KEEP A SEPARATE SET OF “WORK FROM HOME” ATHLEISURE PIECES

If you are going to be spending your whole WFH day in athleisure pieces, I recommend having a nicer set. Keep this set separate from the ones that you're lounging or sleeping in.

If you're in search of a nicer set of athleisure pieces, I've pulled some of my favorite options in the videos (please note that these items were gifted):

MACK WELDON

They're doing a really good job of making items that are super comfortable and feel like sweats, but aren't that thick material that gets you into full lounge mode.

My favorite pieces are their Ace Sweatpants, Sweatshorts, and crewnecks. Everything's really soft, but also what I could see myself working in.

I feel put together and positive in this without feeling like I just rolled out of bed. That’s exactly what we’re looking for right now while working from home.

BYLT Basics Crewneck and Shorts

BYLT BASICS

I love them because they're toeing the lines between athleisure, sweats, and actual professional attire. They’re covering all the work-from-home basics.

I’ve been finding myself in more of their sweats, especially the premium joggers and this crewneck I just picked up. I mean, it’s got pockets!

A majority of their pieces come in a variety of colors so you don’t sacrifice personality or style. These are great options for the CHILL OUT ZONE. Yes, I’m making it a thing.

I’ll be trying their more work-appropriate pieces soon and will report back!

WILLY CALIFORNIA

I was recently introduced to this brand. They're taking a relaxed approach to athletic wear. It's almost like a golf aesthetic, but they’re still pieces that are comfortable and look professional.

The long sleeve polo is my favorite because it’s a nice, breathable fabric and looks ready for work.

I definitely don’t feel like I’m sacrificing style or professionalism with these shorts and polo while working from home.

FINDING THE RIGHT ATHLEISURE SET FOR WFH STYLE

The main key here is that these three brands offer relaxed style without looking like you’ve given up with your WFH style.

That's what I mean when I say try a nicer set of athleisure pieces. Whether you're working in it or not, just make sure that it's something that makes you feel comfortable, positive, and is still reflective of your personality.

WORK FROM HOME GUIDE WRAP-UP

All right, let's round it up:

WFH Tip #1 - Keep your morning routine intact.

WFH Tip #2 - Get dressed for work (from home).

WFH tip #3 - Change out of that work from home outfit.

WFH tip #4 - don’t forget about athleisure.

My favorite tip here is changing your outfits throughout the day so you create structure because it sends physical signals to your brain about what you're doing and creates that good routine. Clearly, I’m all about using physical actions to wake your brain back up! Points for counting how many times I said it.

The underlying element here is to show up for yourself. It's when we show up for ourselves in these physical ways with style, with taking care of our morning routine, and whatever else it may be that helps us stay confident. It helps us stay positive and productive!

UNTIL NEXT TIME!
