Hey you! Is your summer style getting a little bit stale? Are you sick of showing up to the summer barbecue with the same graphic tee, button up shirt or shorts and flip flops? If you are, it’s time to talk about the spring/summer wardrobe essentials that will help you make sure your outfit isn’t the flop!
SPRING & SUMMER WARDROBE ESSENTIALS - SHIRTS YOU NEED
It’s so easy to get bored with spring and summer style. It's hot, we can't layer up and we're stuck in that same outfit over and over and over again.
But this season I'm determined not to let that happen again. The days of lame spring and summer outfits are over and I want you to join me on this.
NO MORE BORING SPRING AND SUMMER STYLE
You still with me? Because we're starting this styling series from the top with all the shirts you should have and heading down to the bottom.
I'm giving you 5 essential shirts that you need in your closet so you can skip the boring graphic tees and share your personality. Let's do this!
SHIRT YOU NEED #1 - THE POLO
Do you have a polo that isn't just for work or just for the golf course? If you don't, you should.
Don't get me wrong, I used to think that polo shirts were just for country club dads.
You know the ones I’m talking about: high-waisted shorts, polo, boat shoes. I'm assuming you parked your boat somewhere nearby. But that sort of style ain’t with it anymore.
POLOS HAVE BEEN MODERNIZED!
There is more focus on patterns, colors, and detailing around the collar and the sleeves. We’re also finally getting print!
Now, we can express our personality by choosing a pattern/print, even if you're just wearing the polo by itself.
DRESS POLOS UP OR DOWN!
You can throw them on with a pair of jeans or throw on a nice light jacket/blazer to elevate that casual style.

You're going to be the best-dressed guy at the barbecue and you're going to be sharing your personality because you chose a good design.
HELPFUL STYLE HINT: GET THE FIT RIGHT!
Make sure we're not going back to that ’90s, boxy, shapeless look that tucked into your shorts.
Find one that fits your shoulders and even accentuates your biceps with the arm openings. There’s nothing wrong with showing off the guns or at least making it look like you did some curls!
Go for one that has structure and helps create the v shape you want through your core.

SHIRT YOU NEED #2 - SHORT SLEEVE BUTTON UP
Let's talk about short sleeved button up shirts. They’re not just for old guys on family vacations! I bet you can picture what I’m talking about, right?
SHORT SLEEVE BUTTON UPS ARE MORE THAN A VACATION SHIRT
The thing about these short sleeved button up shirts is, just like polos, we're getting them in a lot of different colors, patterns and styles as well as different materials from cotton, to linen, to seersucker.
They’ve turned into fantastic layering pieces for spring and summer, which is why I recommend them as another casual shirt every man should own.
SHORT SLEEVE BUTTON UPS SUCCESS IS ALL IN THE STYLING!
You can fully tuck it, half tuck it, French tuck it, and untuck it. Don’t get confused! I just means the styling opportunities are endless.
If you don't tuck it, you can show off the tee underneath. If you tuck your short sleeve shirt, you can play around with how you button it and create structure in your outfit.
HELPFUL STYLE HINT: THE LESS STRUCTURE YOU CREATE THE MORE CASUAL THE SHIRT LOOKS.
Find short sleeve shirts with details you love. You can build up an entire arsenal of these with varying collars, colors, materials, patterns and prints. Start with some that aren’t too much of a stretch out of your comfort zone and build from there. I can guarantee you’ll want more than one and that you’ll quickly agree that these are shirts you need!

SHIRT YOU NEED #3 - WHITE LINEN BUTTON DOWN
Give it up for this Linen Shirt from J.Crew
Trust me, you need a white linen button-down shirt. There’s no question it belongs on the list of shirts every man should own.
LINEN SHIRTS ARE BREATHABLE AND COMFORTABLE!
It comes with the same ability to dress up or down, but its best feature is the lightness of the fabric. It’ll help you feel cooler on those hot days.
YOU WANT WRINKLES THIS TIME.
It also wrinkly, which doesn’t sound like a pro at first, but it totally is. The material wrinkles naturally. So now, you have way less maintenance.
I don’t know about you, but I always associate white linen shirts with a touch of class. They make it look like you know what you're doing and are achieving elevated style without really trying or even knowing what you're doing. That's effortless. That's perfect.
HELPFUL STYLE HINT: START WITH A WHITE LINEN SHIRT
If you don't have any linen, a white shirt is going to be the most versatile for you. There are other colors out there that you can explore later on.
The one I’ve got shown here is my current favorite from J.Crew. Check it out for a good starter.
I’ve also started creeping into linen pants. It's only a matter of time before I become a full linen human over here. For you, I say just start with that white shirt for now.
Once you do, I dare you to tell me this isn’t a shirt every man should own!
SHIRT YOU NEED #4 - THE HENLEY
Henley from HNLY
I see a henley as the t-shirt's older brother that just graduated from college and is looking for his first job. In other words, it’s a little more grown-up but is still casual and fun. How’d I do there?
HENLEYS ARE A VARIATION ON THE TEE YOU’RE USED TO
Okay, even if you didn’t like the analogy, henleys are a great option if you're looking to change it up just slightly from a t-shirt.
If you want to venture outside of that comfort zone but you're not quite ready to get into the other casual shirts we’ve talked about, these should absolutely be on your radar for shirts to own.
HENLEYS PACK PLENTY OF DESIGN
We still get a lot of great colors, patterns, and textures with henleys as well. They’re great layering pieces under one of those button-up shirts or on their own with your choice of pants or shorts. There's really no way to go wrong here!
HELPFUL STYLING HINT: LEAVE A FEW BUTTONS UNDONE!
If you've got 2-3 buttons at the collar of your henley, leave at least the top or even top two unbuttoned (risqué!). This helps vary the neckline and differentiate the henley from the old tees we’re getting away from.

SHIRT YOU NEED #5 - GOOD QUALITY TEE
No, this is not a joke. A tee is in fact a shirt every man needs to own this spring and summer. I know we’ve been talking about replacing tees, but hear me out.
IF YOU’RE GOING TO ROCK A T-SHIRT, IT BETTER BE A GOOD ONE!
If I am letting you get away with wearing a tee, then it needs to be a good one. The one that's been sitting in your drawer for the last year waiting for a summer barbecue needs to be retired or sent to rag duty.
A GOOD TEE IS A QUALITY TEE
If you're going to be wearing a tee on its own this summer, then let’s make it a quality one.
Here’s what I mean: make sure the color doesn’t look worn out, consider prints or patterns, make sure it fits well, find a thicker cotton version, and avoid unintentional holes or distressing!
HELPFUL STYLE HINT: LOOK FOR DIFFERENT KINDS OF T-SHIRTS
Vary your t-shirt selection with crewnecks, v-necks, colors, and prints. You want to have some good options so that your tee collection doesn’t feel boring.
If you’re looking for a different shape, go for a long-line tee. The shirt is longer and accentuates your broad shoulders while slimming everything else down. Just don't go too long because you don't want it to be a dress.
Invest in some good quality tees that you keep separate from your undershirts or old pit-stained ones. These might even be ones you hang up in your closet!
